‘Off The Shelf’ Video
Dear Reader,
In 2015 I completed my MA in Process Oriented Psychology. I researched my thesis through my art practice and exploring my night time dreams. Childhood dreams, or the earliest dream or memory you can recall, have fascinated me for over a decade. Carl Jung suggested that one’s childhood dream reflects a fundamental pattern that run throughout one’s life. Arnold Mindell and Process Work takes this premise much further. In my thesis I talk about the development of psychological theories around childhood dreams within depth psychology and the implications of these ideas. I also apply it to my art practice to understand childhood dreams and my practice more deeply. It was a wonderful journey that I dedicated myself to for a good 3 years.
Here is a link to my published thesis. My thesis is written in friendly language if you are interested.
I produced a video of all the watercolours and poems that were generated. You can take a good look at my watercolours under Portfolios – Views From my Ally. I titled this entire piece Views from my Ally because in Process Work your Ally can often be a disturbing energy that is part of you. Its part of your life journey to wrestle with this energy and befriend it. Through friendliness and relationship with this disturbing part, your identity is able to grow. You become more fully and unapologetically yourself. Learning to embrace the disturbance somehow fulfils the patterning you are born with. This process is not very rational and challenges many beliefs we have about ourselves and others. This process is more akin to a Zen Koan. By that I mean its a mysterious experience that is lived through our bodies and through the dreams that we barely perceive.
In 2016 I showed these work at the Murray Bridge Regional Gallery in an exhibition titled ‘OFF THE SHELF’. This exhibition consisted of the VIEWS painting plus other works that were made in oil paint on linen, such as the featured painting above titles SHELF 4. Below is the video I made of the VIEWS painting with accompanying poems. The poems arose through dreaming and meditating on the paintings. Check out the video below. I hope you enjoy this offering. Thanks for reading.
warmly Lynn

I feel very privileged to have been able to see the shelf in real life. The paintings are wonderful and each poem both captured the essence of the photo (or vice versa) and took the viewer beyond the image.
I especially like “Dragon Surge” – the colours, and the energy as the dragon seems to burst into life.

So glad you enjoyed the video Jen. I’m insterested how words and
pictures enhance each other and how either on their own they remain a little incomplete. Thanks for looking.
