Jewels in a Field

Dear Reader,
I think flowers are natures way to show off colour. Flowers are like jewels in a field. When I collect and arrange nature’s jewels, I always consider the setting, much like an earring or a necklace. I ask myself, ‘what colour is really special in this arrangement and how do the colours around it support it to make it sing? Where on the picture plane do I want that exciting colour to be?’ I try to build my compositions around these jewels.

The picture plane is a feeling space for my body sensations. My guts and heart are in there as my lungs feel the space within an arrangement. Jewels need a setting and the space has to breathe. I feel the space through my body, layer upon layer. My body knows what’s working and what’s not. Thought arises from my body.

We usually think of the perception of colour as visual, but colour also impacts on our body sensations. Sometimes we even refer to colour qualities in musical terms such as loud/ soft, singing colours or somber tones. Some of us almost hear colours. Colours are energetic vibrations that are perceived through all our channels of perception, whether that’s visual, body sensations, sounds, movements or tastes. Our moods and behaviours are affected by colour. If I think of a world that is all red, I feel the excitement and hear the noise of it. If I think of a white world, I’m lost in the spaciousness of Antarctica. I feel differently in both of these scenarios and my state of mind affects my body movements. I may move quickly in one scene while in the other I may freeze up and move very little. I may even lose my sense of a boundary. Colour has an impact on my whole being.

I am enriched through this act of painting with colour. My body, my whole being is a field that organises itself on a picture plane. This week’s offering to you friend is a flower arrangement from my field of being.
