Little Swale

Dear Reader,
In my neighbourhood park lives a little swale. This swale was created by humans to manage the overflow of rainwater after alterations to our local creek. As city infrastructure progresses, we humans anticipate a future with more humans. My swale (yes it’s mine since swale and I have entered into a relationship) continues to trickle and swell with rain, feed the trees, bathe dogs, give mountain bikers a slippery ride, allow children to skim stones on her sometimes calm surface, and provide a place for contemplation.

After a rain I will sometimes visit the swale and stand on the bridge to watch her dance. I close my eyes to listen to her soft murmurings while feeling her under me. An intoxicating earthy aroma enters my nostrils and opens into my brain. I feel woozy. Sun warms my back and releases the fragrance of lemon scented gums. I open my eyes to see our swale freshly for the first time.

In this painting I’ve tried to capture that fresh moment, with all my senses open. I painted this during our winter when swale and I were meeting more regularly. Spring has arrived and the land is drying up. Swale’s character is changing and she is much quieter at present. My visits are less frequent for now, as I’m hanging out with river redgums; but more on that next week.
