My exhibition REFLECTIONS IN LIGHT opened on Saturday 31st of August and I was fortunate enough to give an artist talk about my recent travels in Spain and Portugal. I began this study tour examining the work of Joaquin Sorolla. However, my enquiry soon shifted to a focus on my ancestry and the knotty topic of decolonisation. I want to share my talk with you, so I’ve re-recorded it. It’s not perfect and it’s very human. I am grateful to everyone who attended my talk and shared their stories.

The many small oil paintings in this exhibition are from Lynn’s study tour of Spain and Portugal where she studied the paintings of Joaquin Sorolla, a Spanish master of light. While painting the light in Spain and Portugal, Lynn reflects on her Indian-Portugese heritage. Don’t miss her artist talk at the opening

SOROLLA’S HOUSE- an Extended Postcard

Hi,

Sit down with a tea and get comfortable because this is a long one. I’ve been in Madrid now for nearly 2 weeks, and have set myself up in an apartment to be able to paint. I’ve organised my days to paint most mornings, and immerse myself in museums during the afternoons as most places close at 8 pm. My rooftop apartment has the loveliest views overlooking the city on one side, and down into a square at the other end. It’s perfect for studying the sky, light and weather conditions throughout the day. I admit sometimes I’m torn to leave this place.

UNRAVELLED

When we unravel the ground feels unsteady and we could tip over any time. Our emotions career through a dark, clouded turbulence. Even in calm moments a rumble persists in our bones. We feel vulnerable and doubt ourselves. We are all in this unknown territory even though we marginalise it. The veneer of our identity can easily crack, unpeal and slide into the dirt. The featured painting, SHRINE 11- UNRAVELLED, is a meditation on this aspect of being.
